Saints head coach insinuates Chris Olave will play after speeding arrest: ‘Not going to make any more of it’

0

Chris Olave’s arrest late Monday night likely will not affect his playing status this weekend.

The New Orleans Saints wide receiver was handcuffed after going 70 in a 35 mph zone, police said, “recklessly maneuvering” between lanes and around drivers.

However, the organization seems to be moving on from the sophomore receiver’s mishap quickly. Head coach Dennis Allen says the team is “not going to make” his arrest “any more” than what it is.

“He was arrested for speeding and reckless driving,” Allen said to reporters on Wednesday, via OutKick. “That’s something that we’ve had a chance to sit down and visit with him. He obviously understands that he made a mistake, and he just has got to slow down. That’s really what it was, so we’re not going to make any more of it than that.”

The 2022 first-round draft pick was arrested at around 9 p.m. on Monday night in a New Orleans suburb.

“Officers clocked a Dodge Charger traveling at 70 mph in a posted 35 mph zone. The distance from where the vehicle turned off from Williams Boulevard and where the vehicle was clocked at that speed was only a two-block distance,” a press release reads.

“The vehicle was observed traveling in a reckless manner maneuvering between lanes and around other drivers,” the statement continues.

Olave, 23, was booked into the Kenner County Jail and charged with reckless operation of a motor vehicle. He was released just before midnight.

Olave, an Ohio State product, leads the Saints this season with 39 catches for 471 yards and has caught one touchdown. He finished his rookie campaign with 72 receptions for 1,042 yards and four touchdowns.

Eventbrite marketplace removes Riley Gaines’ ‘Protecting Women’s Sports,’ cites community guidelines violation

0

Former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines has been outspoken about transgender females’ participation in women’s sports.

Gaines, who currently serves as the director of the Riley Gaines Center at the Leadership Institute, has several speaking events scheduled for next month as part of the Speak Louder Campus Tour. The Leadership Institute is serving as the tour’s sponsor.

Gaines’ first stop for November is slated to take place at the University of California, Davis. Information about the “Protecting Women’s Sports with Riley Gaines” event was listed on event management and ticketing website, Eventbrite – until Tuesday.

Eventbrite has since removed the event listing from its marketplace. An email from Eventbrite Trust & Safety stated that the event violated the company’s “community guidelines and terms of service.”

“We have determined that your event is not permitted on the Eventbrite marketplace as it violates our Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, with which all users agree to comply,” Eventbrite wrote.

The organization warned that multiple violations could result in an account being removed from its platform.

“Specifically, we do not allow content or events that – through on- or off-platform activity – discriminate against, harass, disparage, threaten, incite violence against, or otherwise target individuals or groups based on their actual or perceived race, ethnicity, religion, national origin, immigration status, gender identity, sexual orientation, veteran status, age, or disability. As a result, your event has been unpublished. Please be aware that severe or repeated violations of our guidelines may result in the suspension or termination of your Eventbrite account.”

Fox News Digital contacted Eventbrite’s media relations and CEO Julia Hartz for more information on its decision to end the promotion of the event, but did not receive a response at the time of this article’s publication.

Although the event featuring Gaines was removed, several other controversial events appear to remain active on the platform’s ticketing marketplace. One was from a group called “Tempest NYC,” which posted a “Stop the Genocide! Free Palestine!” event that is scheduled to take place next week.

The listing described the event as the following:

“This panel will explore the historical context that led to the current moment, the dynamics currently at play, and the possibilities for building international solidarity for Palestinian liberation.”

Gaines responded to the removal of her event and said she remains committed to delivering a speech on the college campus early next month.

“Eventbrite is the epitome of organizations taking a stand against women and our basic human rights.” Gaines said in a statement sent to Fox News Digital.

“If being pro-woman in woman’s sports is deemed anti-trans, then being pro-trans in woman’s sports is inherently anti-woman. And that is the stand Eventbrite has taken. The event at UC DAVIS is still going to take place next month. My speech will not be stifled.”

Gaines also argued that Eventbrite’s actions are sending a message about the company’s position on women’s rights.

“By allowing pro-terrorist and antisemitic groups to keep their scheduled events on the Eventbrite platform, but canceling events discussing the importance of ensuring the safety, fairness and equal opportunities for women, Eventbrite has sent a clear message to all. Eventbrite is the epitome of organizations taking a stand against women and our basic human rights.”

Brock Purdy unlikely to play Week 8 as 49ers reveal he’s in concussion protocol

0

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy wants to start winning again after dropping his first two regular-season games in back-to-back weeks.

But he might not get that chance in Week 8 after head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that the 2022 NFL Draft’s last pick was placed in concussion protocol.

Shanahan said that Purdy began experiencing concussion-like symptoms while on the plane back to San Francisco following the team’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings on “Monday Night Football.”

Purdy is now unlikely to play on Sunday, as no NFL player has been placed into concussion protocol this season and played the same week, according to ESPN. It would be the first missed game of his career since he was named a starter in Week 14 last season.

If Purdy can’t play, the Niners will likely turn to veteran backup Sam Darnold, who has backed up Purdy since he won the job out of training camp over the now-Dallas Cowboys backup Trey Lance.

The 49ers have the Cincinnati Bengals, who are coming off a bye, on the schedule this Sunday at home.

Purdy’s 2023 season has been trending down after starting 5-0 on the year to cement the 49ers once again as the team to beat in the NFC. But the Cleveland Browns were able to win a defensive battle at home against the Niners in Week 6, 19-17, where rookie kicker Jake Moody missed a 41-yard field goal for the win.

That was the first time Purdy has lost a game as a starter in the regular season, which is an amazing feat, considering that the Iowa State product was “Mr. Irrelevant” in last year’s draft.

However, Monday night’s loss was a shocker to many who believed the 49ers were going to get right back on track against a Minnesota team that has struggled early on this season. Purdy threw two interceptions in the same game for the first time ever, including on a potential game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter that sealed Minnesota’s victory.

The 49ers are still primed to reach the playoffs this season, as they sit at 5-2 atop the NFC West, but snapping the losing streak could be harder if Purdy isn’t on the field Sunday.

Darnold, the third overall pick by the New York Jets in the 2018 NFL Draft, is in his first year with the Niners after three seasons in New York and the last two with the Carolina Panthers. Darnold was 4-2 as a starter for Carolina last year after going 4-7 in 2021. He’s 21-34 for his career as a starter.

The 49ers’ offense is also dealing with injuries to two of its top players in left tackle Trent Wiliams and wide receiver Deebo Samuel. Both were absent from Monday’s loss, with Williams nursing an ankle injury, and Samuel having a fractured shoulder.

Samuel is already ruled out for Sunday, and Williams didn’t practice on Wednesday, which could lead to another missed game there, too.

The 49ers still have a tough defense, though, owning the third-best points allowed per game mark (15.6) despite back-to-back losses. Back in front of a home crowd, San Fran could feel rejuvenated despite missing key players.

Either way, Purdy’s last few weeks haven’t been too pleasant, as he’s facing the most adversity he’s seen early in his NFL career.

US lawmakers discuss digital assets and the House gets a new Speaker

Members of the United States House of Representatives have chosen Mike Johnson to be the body’s next speaker — the second in line to the U.S. presidency and a very powerful figure in Congress.

In an Oct. 25 vote, all 220 Republicans present in the House voted for Johnson, while 209 Democrats cast ballots for Representative Hakeem Jeffries. The vote marked the first time in more than three weeks that the government body had clearly defined leadership. Representative Patrick McHenry had been acting as temporary speaker since Oct. 3 following a vote casting out former speaker Kevin McCarthy.

Unlike other candidates considered for speaker, Representative Johnson’s views on crypto were largely unknown. Many in the space had been hopeful that Representative Tom Emmer — a local advocate for digital assets in Congress — would win the gavel. However, his campaign lasted only a few hours following a statement from former U.S. President Donald Trump urging far-right Republicans not to support him.

While McHenry was likely preoccupied with preparing for the House vote, Financial Services Committee vice chair French Hill led a subcommittee hearing on ‘Modernizing Financial Services Through Innovation and Competition.’ The hearing focused on discussions around crypto-related legislation, including the Financial Services Innovation Act and Examining Consumer Choice in Digital Payments Act.

With the swearing-in of Speaker Johnson, the House of Representatives can once again bring legislation to the floor for votes. Lawmakers previously passed bills out of committee, including the Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act, the Blockchain Regulatory Certainty Act, the Clarity for Payment Stablecoins Act and the Keep Your Coins Act. However, the House may need to move on a new spending bill before Nov. 17 to address a potential government shutdown.
