Australians visiting Europe in 2019 will have to complete some paperwork and pay a fee to enter 30 countries.
From 2024, almost 1.4 billion people from more than 60 nations will need to submit an application in order to be added to the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS).
A handful of the countries that will force travelers to reapply every three years or whenever their passport expires for renewed entrance to the continent are Italy, Greece, Spain, Sweden, and Croatia.
The application costs seven euros ($AUD 11) and can be completed online or using a mobile app.
What is the ETIAS visa, and do I need one to visit Europe?
The majority of European countries use the ETIAS, an electronic system, to keep track of travelers from countries without visa requirements.
Although the technique has only been in development for around seven years, 2024 is the anticipated year of operation.
Travelers with a valid authorization are permitted unlimited entry into European nations for up to 90-day visits every six months.
The usual requirements for entering a nation, such as having a passport and any other necessary travel documents, will still apply.
Australians are not the only ones affected by the new tax; other European countries are getting ready to be added to the list as well.
For entry into the majority of Europe, visas will be required from the United Kingdom, Albania, Serbia, Israel, the United States, and Canada, among others.
Also obliged to apply for the ETIAS are Ukrainians who were uprooted by the Russian military assault.
The European Union has stated that the majority of applications will be handled in a matter of minutes, but it has also cautioned travelers to submit their applications well before finalizing travel or hotel arrangements
