“Some languages are so constructed – English among them – that we really only speak one sentence in our lifetime.” – Mary Ruefle

Ontario, Canada, October 31, 2023, Canadian contemporary artist Janna Watson will be presenting in her next solo exhibition at the Laura Rathe Fine Art Gallery in Houston, Texas. The artist’s new collection ‘Floating Point’ will be on display in the vibrant River Oaks District through December 13, 2023. Watson’s pieces have been covered by publications such as The Toronto Star, The Globe and Mail, NOW Magazine, and House & Home.

Watson’s paintings circulate regularly at international venues, including Art Toronto, Art Miami, Art Taipei, Hamptons Fine Art, and in the Seattle Art Fair, where they were featured by Artsy in its list of “10 Works to Collect at the Seattle Art Fair.”

During a recent press event, Janna Watson commented, “Part of my excitement from painting is seeing shifts within myself manifested into a physical reality. The most truthful form of expression I have found in my life thus far has been in the abstract language of painting. Self-growth is fluid and often goes unnoticed, but when I paint, I can see worlds within myself being constructed and deconstructed. These moments and movements are intuitive and represent my internal landscapes.  The more I learn about painting, I learn about myself. The more I create the more I realize that art is about art. Creation creates and is infinitely unfolding.

Wu-Wei is a concept rooted in ancient Chinese philosophy, particularly Taoism. It can be translated as “effortless action.” Wu-Wei encourages alignment with the natural flow of the universe and acts in harmony with it. I do not plan the work before I start painting. I am affected by the colors I see in nature and around me and I let my materials work with themselves. In this way I feel that I am an equal player to my paint and paintbrush and embrace the flow of my intuition. My work guides me into meditation as I focus on effortless action and emulate the lightness of the clouds.

This series was created in the joy of summer. I fell in love and didn’t have any expectations for the first time in my life. I approached these works with the same unforced joy.”
