While Americans may head to Sin City to hit the jackpot, recent social chatter has called out Las Vegas for the prices people need to pay before they even land.

In the “r/vegas” forum on Reddit, one traveler wrote, “Vegas was amazing, but I can’t with the prices.”

The same person added, “City was amazing. Walking around the different themed casinos was like a fever dream. Sadly, I felt like a spectator instead of a participant. I have honestly never been to a place that was more absurdly priced.”

The user shared surprise at having to spend $50 on two “big bottles” of water, $30 on “house wine” at the resort and guest parking fees.

Redditors took to the comments section to discuss their thoughts on the high prices as well as share some tips.

“Same as NYC prices, it’s [crazy] … Love the area, though, it’s my fav casino right now,” said one Redditor.

Another person commented, “People are constantly asking for Vegas tips and tricks and probably the most common answer is stock up on water, alcohol and snacks at the nearest CVS/Walgreens/ABC Store.”

“It’s unfortunate, but this is standard for Vegas. Just pretend it doesn’t exist. Those $25 waters are there in case you’re too damn hung over to leave the room,” said another user. “You can always just drink tap water.”

In another Reddit thread on the same forum, a user wrote, “Las Vegas sees fall in tourists as ‘ridiculous prices’ hit.”

“Las Vegas is destroying itself and has no one else to blame,” commented one person.

Another individual wrote, “It’s an issue of supply and demand. The problem is that too many casino resorts are targeting the high-end market and there aren’t nearly enough visitors to fill those rooms.”

“Las Vegas is a big convention destination, but many convention planners are feeling ripped off as well and are choosing less expensive destinations,” the same user added.

A different user wrote, “I’m from LA and like most people I know, I used to go to Vegas a couple of times a year. I moved away for a while but as of last year I’m back in LA, and I was excited to travel to Vegas again until I started pricing it out.”

Mallory Dumond, Travelmation adviser and supervisor, told Fox News Digital the cost of visiting Vegas has increased over the past year.

“For those who don’t want to stomach the bloated costs in Las Vegas, I encourage clients to consider Atlantic City, New Jersey, for a more affordable casino-and-beach alternative with major resort brands and entertainment,” suggested Drummond.

“Napa Valley, California is ideal for a laid-back, elevated vacation experience with delicious wine and Michelin-star dining.”

How Gmail’s ‘Manage Subscriptions’ tool works

Recently, Google expanded its Android unsubscribe feature to Gmail’s desktop version, introducing a new “Manage Subscriptions” button. This feature compiles every email list you’re subscribed to, showing the sender’s name, email address, and how many messages you’ve received recently, all in one convenient place. With just a click, you can unsubscribe from any or all of these lists without leaving the page. The tool offers several key benefits. You can quickly unsubscribe from dozens of mailing lists in just a few seconds.

All of your active subscriptions are displayed on a single page, so there’s no need to hunt through your inbox or open individual emails. It’s also safer, as it avoids the risks of clicking on unknown or potentially malicious unsubscribe links found in some messages.

Gmail’s Manage Subscriptions tool also provides a secure and convenient way to reduce inbox clutter without depending on third-party services. Unlike those apps, Gmail’s feature doesn’t ask for access to your inbox, helping protect your personal data. It’s built directly into Gmail, works with your current setup, and doesn’t require any extra downloads or paid plans. In some cases, you may still need to visit a sender’s website to complete the unsubscribe process, and Gmail will give you options like “Go to website” or “Block” on mobile.

The new “Manage subscriptions” tool is being gradually released across the web, iOS and Android, so if it’s not visible yet, it should appear soon.

How to use Gmail’s bulk unsubscribe feature on web, Android, and iOS

1) Access the “Manage Subscriptions” page

On Web (Desktop):

  • Open Gmail in your browser.
  • In the left sidebar, scroll down and click More.
  • Select Manage subscriptions.

On mobile (Android or iOS):

  • Open the Gmail app.
  • Tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top-left corner.
  • Scroll down and tap Manage subscriptions.

2) Review your subscriptions

You will see a list of all the senders you are subscribed to, including their email addresses and the number of recent messages they have sent.

3) Unsubscribe in bulk

  • Next to each sender, tap or click the Unsubscribe button.
  • Confirm the unsubscribe request if prompted.
  • Repeat for as many subscriptions as you want to remove, all from this single dashboard.

If you want to review emails from a sender before unsubscribing, tap/click the sender’s name to view recent messages.

4) Wait for changes to take effect

Unsubscribe requests may take a few days to be fully processed. You might receive a few more emails from those senders before they stop.

5 easy ways to keep your Gmail inbox clean

Keeping your inbox under control doesn’t have to be a chore. With the right habits and tools, you can cut down on clutter, avoid scams, and stay focused on the messages that matter. Here are some simple but effective strategies:

1) Check your “Manage Subscriptions” page often

Make a habit of visiting Gmail’s Manage Subscriptions page every few weeks. This tool shows you all the mailing lists you’re currently subscribed to and how frequently each sender contacts you. Unsubscribing from irrelevant or annoying lists only takes a click and helps prevent your inbox from being overrun with marketing emails.

2) Use Gmail filters to automate cleanup

Set up Gmail filters to automatically archive, label, or delete certain types of messages. For example, you can filter out promotional offers that arrive too often. This keeps your inbox focused without manually sorting through messages every day.

3) Be careful with unsubscribe links and use strong antivirus software

Think twice before clicking on “unsubscribe” links in unfamiliar or suspicious emails. Some of these links are used in phishing attacks to confirm your email address or trick you into handing over personal information. If you’re unsure, it’s safer to use Gmail’s built-in tools instead.

For Android devices, Google Play Protect offers built-in malware protection and can automatically remove known threats. However, it is important to note that Google Play Protect may not be enough. Historically, it isn’t 100% foolproof at removing all known malware from Android devices. That’s why it’s important to add a trusted antivirus app.

The same goes for iPhones, Macs, and PCs. While Apple and Microsoft have built-in defenses, adding reputable antivirus software gives you extra layers of protection against phishing, ransomware, and other digital threats.

To stay safer across all your devices, make sure you’re protected.

See my picks for the best antivirus protection of 2025 for Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS at CyberGuy.com/LockUpYourTech.

4) Use a secondary email for signups

Consider creating an alias email address for online shopping, newsletters, and one-time sign-ups. This keeps promotional messages out of your main inbox and makes it easier to manage subscriptions. By creating email aliases, you can protect your information and reduce spam. These aliases forward messages to your primary address, making it easier to manage incoming communications and avoid data breaches.

For recommendations on private and secure email providers that offer alias addresses, visit Cyberguy.com/Mail.

5) Mark spam instead of deleting

When you receive an unwanted email, don’t just delete it, mark it as spam. Gmail uses this feedback to improve its filtering system and automatically catch similar messages in the future. This helps protect not only your inbox, but other users’ too.

Kurt’s key takeaways

Gmail’s new Manage Subscriptions tool is a long-awaited upgrade for anyone tired of inbox overload. With the ability to see all your subscriptions in one place and unsubscribe in bulk, you can reclaim your inbox, and your attention, in just a few minutes. If you haven’t spotted the feature yet, keep an eye out as Google continues to roll it out to more users. In the meantime, enjoy a cleaner, more focused email experience, one click at a time.

Israeli-Arab activist criticizes Squad members over growing extremism

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Members of the “Squad” are undermining coexistence between Arabs and Jews in the Middle East, Israeli-Arab activist Yoseph Haddad told Fox News Digital.

“Representatives of the Squad are trying to harm the coexistence and partnership that exist in the region between Arabs and Jews,” Haddad said. “I think it was [Alexandria] Ocasio-Cortez herself who said she had no idea about the geopolitics of this region—she’s right. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib know exactly what’s going on here, but they decide to lie and twist the facts.”

Haddad, the CEO of Together Vouch for Each Other — an organization founded in 2018 by young Israeli Arabs to bridge cultural and religious divides — has emerged as a prominent voice in Israel’s public diplomacy efforts following Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023 massacre.

Since the attack, Jewish communities across the United States and Europe have faced a sharp rise in antisemitic incidents, with pro-Hamas demonstrations appearing on college campuses as early as October 8.

LAWSUIT ALLEGES ANTI-ISRAEL GROUP LEADERS ARE ‘HAMAS’ FOOT SOLDIERS IN NEW YORK CITY’

“The first group is what I call the useful idiots — people who have no idea what’s going on but joined because it felt like the cool thing to do,” Haddad said. “Then there are the paid protesters. You see the same faces at different rallies holding different signs — sometimes it’s about LGBTQ issues, sometimes it’s pro-Palestinian, sometimes it’s about internal American problems.”

“It’s always the same person, just a different outfit and a different sign,” he continued. “And the third group — the most dangerous—are the extremists who’ve come from the Middle East. Those are the ones we should be most concerned about.”

Haddad traced the rise of extremist voices in the West to waves of immigration and population displacement from conflict zones in the Middle East. While the majority of Muslim immigrants fled persecution in search of a better life, he said, a vocal minority brought with them the ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood, effectively holding their communities hostage.

Pro Palestinian protests

“When you have so many immigrants all around the world, it’s enough for 10 or 20 percent of them to be extremists — and suddenly, you’re dealing with millions of extremists,” he said.

“Ostriches, when there is a danger and there is a problem, what they do is they stick their head in the sand thinking the problem will just pass because nobody will notice them,” he added. “And this is what the weak governments are doing right now, becoming like an ostrich. The only problem is that no one will skip them over, it will make it easier to chop their heads off.”

Addressing accusations that Israel enforces an apartheid system between Jews and Arabs, Haddad rejected the comparison outright.

“In real apartheid, like in South Africa, everything was segregated — transportation, hospitals, courts, sports, even walking on the sidewalks,” Haddad said. “But if you actually come to Israel and see life here, it’s the complete opposite — 180 degrees different.”

“Stop speaking from a place of emotion — that’s exactly what The Squad is doing,” he continued. “Start talking about facts. Then you’ll realize that anyone who concludes Israel is an apartheid state is an imbecile.”

(REUTERS/David Dee Delgado)

He also mentioned a run-in he had with a protester, who he refers to as “the useful idiots.”

They have no clue … One time, I read the charter of Hamas to some pro-Palestinian useful idiot, I read it to them, and I said you agree to this, and they said no, no, no I didn’t know that. And I said yes, but this is what you are supporting, and he had the headband of Hamas on his head. You understand that this is what you are supporting.

“He literally took the band off after that. Such useful idiots like this you have a lot, not just in the United States, you can see it in Europe as well.”

When asked what he believes the Palestinians ultimately want, Haddad pointed to slogans often heard at anti-Israel and antisemitic protests, such as “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” and “There is only one solution: Intifada revolution.”

“The majority of Palestinians do not want to live side by side with Israel,” Haddad said. “So when people talk about a two-state solution and question Israel’s commitment, I say: Don’t ask the Israelis — ask the Palestinians. You’ll be shocked to find that many of them aren’t willing to accept it.”

Haddad pointed out that history can be approached in multiple ways — through religious texts like the Torah for Jews, the Bible for Christians and the Quran for Muslims. Even those who are atheists can look to history books for evidence of the deep-rooted connection of the Jewish people to the land of Israel.

Haddad argued that the Torah explicitly mentions the presence of Jews in Israel, tracing their presence back thousands of years. He also highlighted the Biblical reference to the birthplace of Jesus in Jewish Bethlehem, challenging the notion that Palestinian Muslims have a historical claim to the land before the Jews.

Haddad noted that while Jerusalem is never mentioned in the Quran, the term “sons of Israel” appears more than 43 times. He also emphasized that the name “Palestine” was imposed by the Romans as a punishment for the Bar Kokhba revolt.

Haddad highlighted that in 1947, Arabs had the opportunity to establish a Palestinian state through the U.N. Partition Plan, which the Jews accepted despite receiving less land and fewer resources. However, the Arabs rejected the plan and opted to wage war. When the Jews emerged victorious, 156,000 Arabs remained within what became Israel. Sharing his personal connection to this history, Haddad explained that his grandfather was one of those Arabs who stayed and eventually became part of the Arab Israeli identity.

“It’s either you accept the fact that Israel exists and is here to stay, or you continue with this cycle of bloodshed and death that we are trying to escape,” said Haddad. “But the ones who will suffer the most are you, the Palestinians, whether in the West Bank or Gaza.”

Several requests for comment sent to Reps. Ocasio-Cortez, Tlaib and Omar were not returned.

New mRNA vaccine shows complete protection against deadly plague bacteria

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Israeli researchers have developed a new vaccine that is “100% effective” against a bacteria that is deadly to humans.

The announcement came from Tel Aviv University, which teamed up with the Israel Institute for Biological Research to create the mRNA-based vaccine, which is the first to protect against bacteria.

“In the study, we show that our mRNA vaccine provides 100% protection against pneumonic plague (a severe lung infection), which is considered the most dangerous form of the disease,” study co-lead Professor Dan Peer, director of the Laboratory of Precision NanoMedicine at Tel Aviv University, told Fox News Digital.

ARIZONA RESIDENT DIES OF PNEUMONIC PLAGUE, THE FIRST DEADLY CASE IN AREA IN NEARLY 20 YEARS

“Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of plague, is considered a highly lethal infectious bacterium, against which no approved vaccine exists.”

This bacterium is so lethal, even at small doses, that it has been classified as a “Tier 1 select agent” by the CDC and is considered a “potential bioterror weapon,” according to Peer.

Co-study author Prof. Dan Peer, left, is pictured with Dr. Inbal Hazan-Halefy (center) and PhD student Shani Benarroch of Tel Aviv University. The team has developed a new vaccine that is “100% effective” against a bacteria that is deadly to humans. (Tel Aviv University)

“Several natural local outbreaks have been recorded in the past few years, indicating that Y. pestis still poses a risk to the human population,” he noted.

The researchers tested the novel mRNA vaccine in animals infected with the bacteria, a university press release stated.

BUBONIC PLAGUE IN THE US: DO YOU NEED TO WORRY ABOUT CATCHING THE RODENT-BORNE DISEASE?

“Within a week, all unvaccinated animals died, while those vaccinated with our vaccine remained alive and well,” the team reported, noting that a single dose provided full protection after two weeks.

The findings were published in the journal Science Advances.

“Our mRNA vaccine provides 100% protection against pneumonic plague, which is considered the most dangerous form of the disease.”

Before this study, mRNA vaccines were only shown to protect against viruses, such as COVID-19, but not bacteria, according to Tel Aviv University’s Dr. Edo Kon, who co-led the study.

“Until now, scientists believed that mRNA vaccines against bacteria were biologically unattainable,” said Kon in the announcement. “In our study, we proved that it is, in fact, possible to develop mRNA vaccines that are 100% effective against deadly bacteria.”

While vaccines for viruses trigger human cells to produce viral proteins, which then train the immune system to protect against them, that same method hasn’t been effective for bacteria.

Instead, the scientists used a different method to release bacterial proteins that successfully created a “significant immune response.”

“To enhance the bacterial protein’s stability and make sure that it does not disintegrate too quickly inside the body, we buttressed it with a section of human protein,” they wrote. “By combining the two breakthrough strategies, we obtained a full immune response.”

The goal is for this new technology to fast-track vaccines for bacterial diseases, according to the researchers. (iStock)

Dr. Jacob Glanville, CEO of Centivax, a San Francisco biotechnology company, reiterated the importance of the study.

“This is distinct from research in coronavirus, influenza and cancer, which have so far been driving mRNA vaccine applications,” Glanville, who was not part of the research team, told Fox News Digital.

The study shows how mRNA technologies can be rapidly applied to “novel threat areas,” he confirmed.

“Following blowback from the mandates and rare but admittedly problematic side effects related to initial COVID-19 vaccines, mRNA as a platform has faced additional scrutiny to make sure that the next generation of vaccines to emerge from it has learned the lessons from the initial vaccines, and improved upon them,” Glanville told Fox News Digital.

“This research demonstrates yet another large application area for the technology.”

Potential limitations

The primary limitation of the study, according to Peer, is that the vaccine’s effectiveness was shown in mice.

“As with any pre-clinical study, it needs to be evaluated in a clinical study in order to assess its effectiveness in humans,” he told Fox News Digital.

Lab research

The primary limitation of the study, according to the lead researcher (not shown), is that the vaccine’s effectiveness was shown in mice. (iStock)

In addition, the experimental mRNA vaccine is based on the “lipid nanoparticle (LNP) mRNA vaccine platform” that was recently approved for COVID-19 vaccines, Peer noted, which requires “cold chain logistics” (a supply chain that uses refrigeration).

“Nevertheless, extensive studies are performed in our lab, focusing on lipid formulation stability optimization that will enable room-temperature storage,” the researcher added.

Looking ahead

The goal is for this new technology to fast-track vaccines for bacterial diseases, according to the researchers. This could be particularly beneficial for pathogenic (disease-causing) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

“If tomorrow we face some kind of bacterial pandemic, our study will provide a pathway for quickly developing safe and effective mRNA vaccines.”

“Due to excessive use of antibiotics over the last few decades, many bacteria have developed resistance to antibiotics, reducing the effectiveness of these important drugs,” said Peer.

“Consequently, antibiotic-resistant bacteria already pose a real threat to human health worldwide. Developing a new type of vaccine may provide an answer to this global problem.”

As Peer pointed out, the quick development of the COVID-19 vaccine was based on years of mRNA research for similar viruses.

“If tomorrow we face some kind of bacterial pandemic, our study will provide a pathway for quickly developing safe and effective mRNA vaccines.”

As this was a pre-clinical proof-of-concept study, Peer noted that several major milestones still need to be fulfilled before this vaccine could be considered for commercial rollout.

However, he believes that in an emergency situation, the vaccine could be scaled up and prepared in a “relatively short time.”

Peer concluded, “Beyond addressing the threat of plague outbreaks and potential bioterrorism, this study opens the door to developing mRNA vaccines against other antibiotic-resistant bacteria, offering a powerful new strategy to combat rising antimicrobial resistance and improve global pandemic preparedness.”

The study was supported by the European Research Council, the Israel Institute for Biological Research and the Shmunis Family Foundation.

Roman-era settlement with military artifacts unearthed in western Germany

Archaeologists recently uncovered a mysterious Roman-era settlement site in Germany, complete with building remains and hundreds of artifacts dating back nearly two millennia.

The Schafbreite site, located within the western German town of Delbrück, has been settled since the first century A.D. The site was recently excavated by the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe (LWL).

In a June 13 statement, the LWL announced the results of its excavation, revealing a trove of discoveries that mostly date back to the fourth and fifth centuries A.D.

LATE BRONZE AGE SETTLEMENT DATING BACK 3,000 YEARS UNCOVERED AMID ROAD WORK: ‘IMPORTANT DISCOVERY’

Officials identified hundreds of ancient features at the site, including numerous holes in the ground that were likely from ancient wooden posts.

After months of careful digging, archaeologists also found two “clearly identifiable” buildings, along with two pit houses, two wells and a cremation grave — along with several hundred artifacts.

“Seven hundred and fifty individual finds were recovered from the ancient cultural layer preserved under a thick ash soil, 600 of which were metal,” said the LWL’s statement, translated from German to English.

Archaeologists also explained that the site “must have been settled at different times, making it a multi-period settlement site.”

“The finds from various periods also show the inhabitants had access to Roman material culture.”

“The finds from various periods also show that the inhabitants had access to Roman material culture,” the press release said.

The statement added, “The new excavations have expanded the picture of this site, as a burial has now been confirmed: The isolated cremation grave contained remains from the pyre, such as charcoal, cremated remains and parts of burned grave goods.”

MYSTERIOUS ‘DUMPED’ BODIES OF WOMAN AND CHILD FOUND BY ARCHAEOLOGISTS IN PICTURESQUE TOWN

In the burial section, archaeologists found that one decedent was buried with a spearhead, two garment clasps and a broken bone comb, in addition to “a fire steel, and an animal head buckle with fittings.”

“Experts date this buckle to the 4th or 5th century based on its shape. It further confirms the settlers’ contact with the Roman cultural sphere, as it belonged to the Roman military belt,” officials said in a statement.

Historians were unable to identify the mysterious burial. The LWL speculated that the deceased person may have been a Germanic mercenary in the Roman military.

ARCHAEOLOGISTS MAKE GRIM DISCOVERY AFTER FINDING ANCIENT ROMAN BUILDINGS

“[It’s] a special find, as it is the first burial in East Westphalia where parts of a Roman military belt have been detected, previously only known from surface finds in other regions,” officials said.

Other discoveries at the site included a cattle trough, a construction pit with ceramics and a three-foot-wide well that was made from tree trunks.

Hidden gene mutation doubles dementia risk in men over 70, study finds

A hidden genetic mutation could predict a man’s likelihood of developing dementia.

That’s according to an Australian study led by Monash and Curtin Universities, which analyzed the medical data of thousands of Australians and Americans.

Men who had a certain variant in the haemochromatosis (HFE) gene — which regulates iron levels in the body — were found to be at a higher risk of dementia, the researchers found.

YOUR LATE-NIGHT TV BINGE COULD SABOTAGE YOUR BRAIN HEALTH, DOCTOR WARNS

Previously healthy men over age 70 who have two copies of the variant, which is known as H63D, are at least twice — or up to four times — as likely to develop dementia.

Having just one copy did not appear to elevate the risk.

One in 36 men carry two copies of the mutation; one in three have just a single copy.

“It is only men who have two copies of the variant that are at risk,” study co-author Professor John Olynyk from the Curtin Medical School told Fox News Digital. “Women are not affected by the abnormality – we do not know why that is at the current point in time.”

WARDING OFF ALZHEIMER’S MIGHT MEAN MAKING THESE 11 LIFESTYLE CHANGES, EXPERT SAYS

The study, which was published in the journal Neurology, used data from the ASPirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly (ASPREE) trial, which gathered health and aging data for 19,114 healthy older adults.

Those who have the genetic variant can’t change it, but it’s possible that the “brain pathways” it affects could be treated, Olynyk noted.

Older man dementia

“It is only men who have two copies of the variant that are at risk,” one of the researchers told Fox News Digital. Women are not affected. (iStock)

“The HFE gene is routinely tested for in most Western countries … when assessing people for haemochromatosis, a disorder that causes the body to absorb too much iron,” the doctor said. “Our findings suggest that perhaps this testing could be offered to men more broadly.”

Despite the fact that the HFE gene is responsible for controlling iron levels, the team found no direct link between iron and dementia risk.

“Our findings suggest that perhaps this testing could be offered to men more broadly.”

“This points to other mechanisms at play, possibly involving the increased risk of brain injury from inflammation and cell damage in the body,” Olynyk added.

More research is needed to determine why the heightened risk wasn’t seen in women.

“Understanding why men with the double H63D variant are at higher risk could pave the way for more personalized approaches to prevention and treatment,” added co-author Professor Paul Lacaze from Monash University in a press release.

The main limitation of the study, according to Olynyk, was that the study population was largely composed of Australians.

This is what no one planned could happen after taking a DNA test

“Whether other populations exhibit the same effects is unclear,” he told Fox News Digital. “Our work should be repeated in different countries to assess this.”

“Further research will be undertaken to try and determine the likely mechanism by which this anomaly causes dementia and what more we can do to reduce the impact of it.”

Beyond this specific mutation, many other genetic and environmental factors can contribute to dementia risk, Olynyk noted.

“While genetic risk factors cannot be changed, the mechanisms by which these genetic abnormalities and environmental factors cause disease may well be modifiable to some extent, through adopting a healthy lifestyle and being proactive about maintaining an overall good state of health,” he said.

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Google is making a push to ensure its AI, Gemini, is tightly integrated with Android systems by granting it access to core apps like WhatsApp, Messages, and Phone. The rollout of this change started on July 7, 2025, and it may override older privacy configurations unless you know how to disable Gemini on Android. Here’s what you need to know.

What’s changing with Gemini on Android

Currently, the official email and support pages aren’t providing consistent information on Gemini’s true behavior regarding this change and how to disable it. However, we do know that Gemini will be able to interact with other apps. For instance, it would be able to make calls through the Phone app or send messages through WhatsApp.

Gemini will still be able to interact with your Android apps even if you turned off Gemini Apps Activity in the Gemini Apps setting. This setting allows Google to save your interactions with Gemini apps. These are used to train the AI by allowing “human reviewers (including service providers)” to “read, annotate, and process your Gemini Apps conversations,” according to the Google support page.

What to know before you disable Gemini on Android

Settings location may vary. Not all users will see the same options in the Gemini app or Google app, as settings can differ based on device model, region, or update status. If you don’t see a particular setting, it may be due to these factors.

How to stop the Gemini app from accessing your Android apps

Google made it vague in the email by saying you can block Gemini from interacting with other apps in the Apps settings. That means if you have Gemini installed on your phone as a separate app, you need to do the following:

  • Open the Google Gemini app on your Android phone.
  • Tap your profile picture icon in the top-right corner of the screen.
  • Tap Apps in the menu.
  • Turn off the toggles for the apps you don’t want Gemini to access, which will then disable Gemini’s ability to interact with those specific apps and change the switch from blue to grey.

Alternatively, you can just uninstall the Gemini app from your Android phone.

  • Long-press the Google Gemini app.
  • Tap Remove in the menu.

If your device doesn’t have Gemini installed already, the recent changes won’t secretly install it. You’re likely safe for now. However, you need to stay vigilant in case future updates try to sneak in Gemini functionality without your knowledge.

How to disable Gemini in the Google app on Android

Gemini can also interact with other apps through the Google app on Android. So it makes sense to disable Gemini on Android in that app as well. Here’s how to do that:

  • Tap your profile picture in the top-right corner.
  • Tap Settings in the menu.
  • Tap Google Assistant.

  • If it’s set to Gemini, select Google Assistant.
  • Tap Switch in the pop-up.

What happens after you disable Gemini on Android

Even after you disable Gemini on Android, there are a few key things to understand about how your data is handled and what settings might still require your attention:

If you have already disabled Gemini features, they should remain off: Google states that if you previously turned off Gemini’s access to apps, those privacy settings will persist after the update. However, it’s wise to double-check your settings to ensure nothing has changed.

No forced installation: The Gemini app will not be installed automatically if it isn’t already present on your device. You remain in control of whether or not to add it.

Data review by humans: Conversations with Gemini may be reviewed and annotated by human reviewers for quality control and AI training purposes. Even if your activity is deleted, data reviewed by humans can be retained for up to three years, and this data is disconnected from your Google Account before review. Avoid sharing confidential or sensitive information in Gemini chats, as Google explicitly advises against it.

Kurt’s key takeaways

While some users may welcome this change, if you value control and transparency over your data, limiting its access is the best option. Unfortunately, Google’s guidance on the subject is murky, and you can’t fully disable Gemini on Android unless you root your Android phone. But by proactively reviewing and tweaking a few settings, you can regain some control.

The pros and cons of power saver programs

0

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Power saver programs are utility-sponsored demand response initiatives that help reduce electricity usage during periods of peak demand. These programs typically target central air conditioners (AC) and heat pumps, since cooling equipment drives spikes in summer energy demand. In exchange for incentives such as bill credits or rebates, participating homeowners allow the utility to temporarily adjust or cycle their HVAC systems on hot days.

But it’s not all that straightforward. I recently received an email from Leah, an HVAC professional based in Rio Rancho, New Mexico.

“I would like to see an article about the push for Smart Thermostats, and the convergence of the utilities’ attempts to control air conditioning usage to conserve energy.”

He pointed to a growing push for smart thermostats and what he sees as an effort by utilities to take more control over air conditioning use, all under the banner of energy conservation.

Let’s discuss the power saver programs in detail, including their pros, cons and everything else you need to know.

How power saver programs control your AC

Most residential power saver programs function by temporarily reducing air conditioner usage at participating homes during peak periods (usually summer afternoons). In most cases, the utility installs a control device on the outdoor AC unit’s compressor. During a peak event, a radio signal from the utility will cycle the compressor off and on at set intervals. Legacy programs like Xcel Energy’s Saver’s Switch use this method.

Another method utilities use is controlling thermostats. You’re asked to enroll your Wi-Fi smart thermostat in a bring-your-own-thermostat program. During a demand response event, the utility or program operator remotely raises the thermostat setpoint for a few hours. This causes the AC to run less. Most of these programs allow you to override the change via the thermostat or app; however, emergency events may temporarily disable this option.

Benefits of joining a power saver program

Power saver programs provide several benefits for both participating consumers and the wider community. First, there are bill savings and incentives. Participants receive direct financial rewards, ranging from annual bill credits of up to $40 to up-front enrollment bonuses of $25-$100.

These programs also result in collective demand reduction during peak times, helping prevent grid overloads and blackouts. By coordinating energy reductions across thousands of homes, utilities can avoid firing up expensive peaker plants or purchasing high-priced electricity on the open market.

Reducing peak demand can also help avoid turning on older, more polluting fossil-fuel generators. That means fewer CO₂ emissions and lower air pollution on the hottest days, when health risks are already high.

Drawbacks and risks of power saver programs

Despite the benefits, residential power saver programs come with several potential drawbacks and concerns that have been raised by both customers and experts.

“In New Mexico, where I live and work, our electric utility, PNM, offers a ‘Power Saver’ program. Customers can opt in to have a box mounted to their condenser, which disrupts the signal between the furnace and the condenser during peak consumption hours, effectively shutting it down,” Leah tells me.

“It’s not great for the condenser, and we often get calls from customers who don’t fully understand what they signed up for and are confused when their AC stops working. Now, there’s a push to gain access to Wi-Fi-enabled thermostats to achieve the same goal. They want to control our ACs.”

Understandably, many people are uncomfortable with utilities taking over their cooling systems, especially in extreme heat. Take the 2022 incident with Xcel Energy in Colorado. During an energy emergency, 22,000 smart thermostat users were temporarily locked out of adjusting their ACs. Many had never experienced a no-override event before and were understandably frustrated. While rare, these incidents raise valid concerns about control and consent.

There are also technical concerns. Frequent short cycling of AC compressors can lead to increased wear and tear. Every startup strains the compressor motor, and repeated on-off cycles within a short period may reduce efficiency or shorten the unit’s lifespan, although this depends on the system and the frequency of the events.

Smart thermostats and utility control: What to know

Some people enrolled in thermostat adjustment programs without realizing it. This leads to confusion and frustration when their air conditioning is unexpectedly limited. Often, this happens because smart thermostats come with default opt-in settings or vague incentive language that can be confusing.

In Texas in 2021, many residents saw their smart thermostats rise above 78°F during an ERCOT conservation alert. They later found out they had unknowingly agreed to let utilities make temperature adjustments.

Privacy and security concerns with smart thermostats

These programs also raise important data privacy concerns. Wi-Fi-enabled thermostats collect and transmit sensitive information, including occupancy patterns, temperature preferences and when a home is likely unoccupied.

Cybersecurity is another issue. Like any internet-connected device, smart thermostats can be vulnerable to hacking or malicious remote commands. So far, no major breaches have impacted AC demand programs, but privacy advocates say the risks are real and growing.

7 things to do if you’re considering power saver programs

Whether you’re thinking about signing up or are already enrolled, these steps will help you stay in control, protect your comfort and avoid unwanted surprises:

1) Read the fine print and opt in carefully

Before you join any power saver or thermostat program, read the terms completely. Ensure you understand the extent of the utility’s control, whether you can override changes and how frequently adjustments may occur. Always choose manual enrollment during smart home app setup instead of letting it enroll you automatically.

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

2) Choose thermostats with clear override options

Use a Wi-Fi thermostat that makes it easy to override changes during demand response events. Many models let you opt out temporarily or permanently through the app or the device itself. Learn how to do this before a peak event occurs, so you’re not caught off guard.

Find expert-reviewed smart thermostats that put you in control at Cyberguy.com/SmartThermostats

3) Stay informed about energy events

Turn on alerts from your utility so you receive notifications about peak demand events by email, text or app. Check your utility’s website for schedules or forecasts and opt out in advance if needed. Staying informed gives you more control over how your system behaves.

4) Secure your smart devices

Use strong passwords for your thermostat and home Wi-Fi. Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) if available. Consider using a password manager to generate and store complex passwords.

Get more details about my best expert-reviewed Password Managers of 2025 at Cyberguy.com/Passwords

5) Update software

Keep your thermostat’s software updated to protect it from potential security risks or remote interference.

Kurt’s key takeaway

Power saver programs can help reduce grid stress and offer small financial incentives, but they come with trade-offs. Customers may experience reduced comfort, equipment wear, and loss of control, sometimes without realizing they’ve opted in. There are also valid concerns around data privacy and security. These programs need clearer communication and better safeguards if they’re going to be widely accepted.
